Attending a networking event is a great way to grow your connections.
It offers an opportunity to build valuable relationships as you meet and mingle with like-minded individuals. And with in-person gatherings starting to happen again, now is a good time to consider signing up for one! But if you want to take full advantage of its benefits, there are a few things you should do before you go.
How can you be sure to use your time wisely? Follow these steps to help you prepare for — and make the most of — your next networking event.
Step 1: Set attainable goals
What is the best possible outcome of this event? Why are you attending? Should you bring a wingman? You must go in with a purpose! Considering the pros and cons of networking events you must have a positive attitude and proper mindset. Otherwise, it’s just a waste of time. Set relationship-building goals with specific results you want to achieve, such as introducing yourself to the keynote speaker.
Step 2: Do your homework
See if you can obtain the attendance list in advance and research participants, guest speakers, and types of companies. Put together a cheat sheet with the details of each person you’re seeking out, like where they work and how you may benefit each other. This will help you set the groundwork for meaningful conversations.
Step 3: Connect ahead of time
This is huge! If you do get your hands on the attendance list ahead of time, check out who is planning to go. Do you think you can potentially provide value to someone? If appropriate, go ahead and send them a LinkedIn invite. Introduce yourself and indicate how great it will be to meet them in person. Then make sure that you do!
Step 4: Set up a pre-event meeting
You don’t necessarily have to wait until the start time of the event to meet up! Reach out to those you just connected with and coordinate a one-on-one beforehand. This provides more opportunities for longer conversations with those you really want to foster relationships with.
Step 5: Fine-tune your elevator pitch
Depending on what outcomes you’re looking to achieve, your elevator pitch can vary from event to event. Be ready to offer one that is effective! And I highly recommend that you practice this with a friend before you go.
Step 6: Know how to start (and end) a conversation
Do you have a few ice breakers in your back pocket? Are you armed with how to end a conversation? It’s important to not just know the right way to start and have a meaningful discussion, but you should also understand proper ways to bring it to a close while making a good impression.
Step 7: Count your business cards
Don’t wait until five minutes before you’re heading out the door to realize you ran out! Check your supply and give yourself enough time for any last-minute printing.
Step 8: Find out the dress code
While you want to be memorable, you do not want to turn up in something totally inappropriate for the event. Be well-groomed and choose your attire accordingly.
Step 9: Arrive early
Make sure you know where you’re going and how you will get there. Don’t miss out because you got lost or were searching for a parking spot! Can’t obtain the attendance list beforehand? This gives you a chance to peruse the names and do some quick online sleuthing before others arrive. It also offers the potential to scope out the venue and possibly speak with the organizer if that was one of your goals!
