Usually people with anxiety get overwhelmed very easily, and that might be where your fear begins. But networking is like planting a tree. You have to plant the seeds first, and then it could take years and years before the relationship truly blooms.
It’s important to not set your expectations too high too soon. You might feel as though you have one shot to make an impression and plant a seed, and if it doesn’t go well, you’ve missed your chance. That’s where the anxiety comes in.
Your approach to building relationships should be the same as your approach to taking a test or playing a sport. You have to go in prepared. My article “Maximizing a Networking Event” lays out steps you should be taking before meeting someone. Most of these tips apply to an event with multiple people, or if you have plans to meet one-on-one. Arm yourself with good questions to ask as well.
