10 Ways to Build First-Class Networks While Still in School

College is a great time to concentrate on meeting new people and building your networks.

The relationships you establish at school can potentially remain with you for a very long time—I can personally say this is true! But not everyone realizes the importance of cultivating first-class connections, especially while in college.

When you put effort into improving your spheres of influence you’re already one step ahead of your peers. But don’t just focus on increasing your number of contacts; networking is more about forming the foundation for meaningful relationships that get even stronger through time.

Being a student is a great time to take advantage of the many opportunities right in front of you! And there are successful steps you can take to create meaningful connections while at university even if you’re learning remotely. Here are ten ways to build first-class networks while still in school:

  • Mind your mindset: Your way of thinking affects how you nurture your networks, and when you approach it in a positive way then positive results will occur
  • Take heed of what you have: Evaluate your current spheres of influence! You most likely don’t realize what you already have in front of you and can mutually gain through
  • Sign up for activities: Take part in a sport, club, or hobby group where you’ll meet others who share the same interests
  • Go to gatherings: Check out the postings through your career or alumni office for any social events that focus on networking and take advantage of what they offer
  • Apply for internships: Choose positions that align with your intended career or participate in study groups which directly promote learning from and associating with your peers
  • Volunteer: Participate in on-campus events or school-run activities within your community where you’ll have the opportunity to meet new people
  • Connect with your professors: Many are more than willing to share their skills and knowledge and possibly put you in contact with others who can provide a mutual benefit
  • Partner with a mentor: There are many benefits to working closely with someone you admire and trust to guide you down the right path and help you reach your goals
  • Utilize LinkedIn and other social media: Connect with classmates and professors and join groups with like-minded people who share your ideas and interests
  • Listen and keep notes: Always be present in the moment and contribute to conversations when you can; track important details (even about your closest friends!) such as birthdays, anniversaries, or dates where they received an award or other distinction and then follow up when the time is right

You may be limited in the availability for in-person interactions given our current circumstances, but there are still many ways to forge relationships online, including through Zoom and other video chatting services that enable you to connect with others. Don’t let an opportunity pass you by!

Learning how to best create and leverage relationships while at school is important for building networks that will inspire your professional and personal success for years to come. It’s never too early to start cultivating your connections! And realizing its importance is your first step.
